Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) technology is quickly becoming an important B2B technology in aiding companies with asset tracking, real-time supply chain location management, and warehouse management systems. What happens if some day, RFID is used by retailers, or even the government, to track your every move? RFID chips and readers would make this possible, although the possibility of such a thing occurring seem distant. But already, the European Union and the United States have announced to begin issuing passports containing micro-RFID chips that will contain personal information.
Despite the controversy, McCarter has a positive outlook on RFID that is reflected in his website. "The privacy stuff is scary but RFID is definitely going to revolutionize the way information is exchanged in the world," McCarter says. "It's going to revolutionize the movement of goods [and] it's going to speed up the way in which information is transferred."
McCarter also believes that RFID will be more of a help than a threat to consumers, especially where healthcare is concerned. RFID tags are likely to make hospitals more efficient and cost-effective as well as reduce pharmaceutical counterfeiting.
