In a four-week study of 1,587 men, researchers report that men who suffer from premature ejaculation (PE) had an average intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT) of 1.8 minutes, compared to 7.3 minutes in men who did not. Men with PE and their female partners also had higher ratings for personal distress, interpersonal difficulty with their partner, lack of ejaculation control, and dissatisfaction with sexual intercourse.

In a four-week study of 1,587 men, researchers report that men who suffer from premature ejaculation (PE) had an average intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT) of 1.8 minutes, compared to 7.3 minutes in men who did not. Men with PE and their female partners also had higher ratings for personal distress, interpersonal difficulty with their partner, lack of ejaculation control, and dissatisfaction with sexual intercourse.



This scientific study, appearing in the May issue of The Journal of Sexual Medicine, is the first large epidemiologic study to define patient populations of those with (207) and without (1380) premature ejaculation by measuring average times to ejaculation with stopwatches. This average, or IELT, is defined as the time between the start of vaginal intromission and the start of intravaginal ejaculation.



This study is also one of the first data sets to address the concerns of female partners. Both members of the couples studied were asked to report on a variety of subjective factors. Significant overlap in IELT was observed between the groups who suffered from PE and those without. Thus, the study data suggest IELT may not be sufficient to diagnose PE, and that subjective factors, like lack of control, may also be valid indicators.



“Most people think uni-dimensionally about PE in terms of considering it a disorder of time,” statesStanley E. Althof, Ph. D., corresponding author of the study. “This article demonstrates that subjective factors like sense of control, distress, and sexual satisfaction need to be considered when treating this highly prevalent disorder.”



PE is the most common male sexual dysfunction affecting men and their partners. However, available data suggest that only 1-12% of males self-reporting receive treatment for their dysfunction. According to The Journal of Sexual Medicine editor Irwin Goldstein, most physicians do not inquire about the existence of premature ejaculation when the patient has other sexual complaints or when the partner has orgasmic dysfunction. As seen in this study, premature ejaculation adversely affects sexual satisfaction, and partner distress is a common motivation for afflicted men to seek treatment.

Dr. James Gordon, founder and director of The Center For Mind-Body Medicine (CMBM) and former chair of the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Policy, led the Healing the Wounds of War (HWW)team to Israel as the conflict escalated in Gaza and erupted in the North of Israel and Lebanon. Their mission: to continue training health and mental health professionals to heal psychological trauma on a population-wide level, using psychological self-care, mind-body medicine and group support. The challenge: to train these physicians, psychologists and educators in the midst of conflict and to work jointly with Israelis and Palestinians.

CMBM’s HWW team arrived in Israel on July 9th, delighted to rejoin the Israeli Leadership team and to work with them to train 130 mental health, health and education professionals, in the use of Mind-Body approaches to heal psychological trauma and reduce stress. For the first time they would work with a mixed group of Israelis and Palestinians -- and at a time when the escalating conflict in Gaza was likely to inflame passions and provoke confrontation.



As science, including CMBM’s own research continues to support the effectiveness of Mind-Body Medicine and holism moves into mainstream medical practice, more healthcare practitioners seek to integrate Mind-Body techniques into their work. In the CMBM training Israeli and Palestinian participants practiced using meditation, guided imagery, written exercises, yoga, movement and drawings to help them deal with the trauma and tension of the ongoing conflict with their fears of one another as well as with challenges at work and in their personal lives.



James S. Gordon, M. D., CMBM’s Founder and Director, and a leading expert in Mind-Body Medicine, anticipated his trainees and the Leadership Team’s apprehension at participating in mixed groups. He was, however, delighted not only with the way they learned and used these techniques but by how the training enhanced mutual understanding and compassion—qualities in short supply in the last two months in the Middle East.



The HWW team also presented an introductory day long workshop in the West Bank for 90 Palestinians and laid the ground work for continuing its highly successful effort in Gaza where 90 trainees are implementing, under the guidance of a Palestinian Leadership Team, the CMBM approach in virtually every major government and non government mental health organization.



In the months ahead, CMBM plans to extend its program into the devastated Northern region of Israel, to offer additional large scale trainings in Gaza and to develop significant joint Israeli-Palestinian program -- “training thousands to heal millions.”

$10,000 grant awarded from the Technology Seeding Project and Northside Community Development Fund to assist media advertising sales strategy software growth initiatives.

Small companies located on Pittsburgh’s North Side have the opportunity to apply for grants ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 through the Technology Seeding Project, a program that helps Northside businesses adopt new computer, web-based technology or industry specific software to help businesses compete. The grant is administered by the North Side Community Development Fund, which provides business lending and commercial real estate development services for small business located on Pittsburgh’s North Side.



“North side companies awarded the grant can invest in technology that will either directly support job creation on the North Side, or will help the businesses prosper and expand in the future,” says Mila Nguyen, assistant executive director for the Northside Community Development Fund. “The estimated 30 jobs Matrix Solutions created is wonderful for the Northside and we look forward to continued success of the business.”



As part of a growth strategy, Matrix Solutions will use the technology grant to invest in the upgrade of their telephone and communications system to a more modern platform that is scalable beyond thirty employees today.



“Matrix Solutions is thrilled to have been awarded the grant to assist us in investing and upgrading our technology in order to better serve our customers,” commented Brian Lunt, chief operating officer of Matrix Solutions. “In addition, we chose the North Side for our new headquarters location so that we could contribute and be a part of the great city of Pittsburgh.”



Primary funding for the three-year program comes from a program created by the U. S. Federal Department of Health & Human Services Administration for Children and Families, Office of Community Services. The grant cycle is three years long, with a total of $250,000 to give away. Twenty-two grants have been awarded to North Side businesses since its inception.

To replenish them, experts recommend consuming snacks with a moderate to high "glycemic index" immediately after a workout. The glycemic index (GI) is a measure of how fast a food causes glucose levels or "blood sugar" to rise. Moderate - to high-GI foods from natural sources include whole grains (brown rice, graham crackers, whole wheat bread or crackers), fruit, and whole-grain cereal bars. Only yoghurts that are naturally sweetened with crystalline fructose, such as Mountain High, are low-glycemic, but they go well with high-glycemic carbohydrate sources. According to the new guidelines, jointly released by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada(SOGC) and the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society (CFAS), this procedure significantly reduces the risk of twins while offering acceptable birth rates for women under 35 who have a good prognosis to conceive.



Genesis has been offering this group of women the option of eSET since 2006. "To date, our clinic has performed the most eSETs of any clinic in Canada," says Dr Hitkari. "With a 68-per-cent pregnancy rate for women under 35, we feel confident that we can provide women with an excellent chance of getting pregnant without the higher risk of miscarriage or health problems associated with multiple pregnancy."



Studies have shown that for multiples, even twins, there is a higher risk of premature birth, cerebral palsy, respiratory diseases, blindness, deafness and death as compared to singleton pregnancies.



Along with providing health benefits to mother and baby, the new SOGC guidelines stress the cost benefit of eSET for the health care system and recommend that IVF should be publicly funded to encourage the most women to undergo this procedure.



Dr Hitkari is optimistic that the use of eSET will grow as fertility clinics across the country adopt these guidelines and encourage women under the age of 35 to opt for the safest procedure. "We are excited that the pregnancy rates we are seeing at Genesis with eSET are as good or better than transferring multiple embryos. Now we just need to get public funding for fertility treatments like IVF."
