New Resveratrol Data Shows Potential Boost for Heart Health

A new study found resVida® Trans-resveratrol demonstrates potential cardiovascular health benefits in humans. Two separate analyses of one of the first studies involving human patients concluded that there was improved blood flow. A novel way to obtain resVida® is by eating a gourmet chocolate bar, the Resveratrol WineTime™ Bar.

Results of a new clinical study show for the first time that a special kind of resveratrol, the powerful antioxidant found in red wine, can improve heart health in humans.

Two separate analyses of one of the first studies involving human patients unveiled by University of South Australia researchers Narelle Berry, Ph. D., and Rachel Wong, B. S. concluded that resVida® trans-resveratrol prompted a positive effect on blood flow of the brachial artery, the artery that runs from the shoulder down to the elbow. Measuring the blood flow of this artery is considered a key indicator of vascular health.

ResVida® is a 99 percent pure form of trans-resveratrol, the antioxidant polyphenol found in red wine that has been widely acclaimed for its ability to help support cardiovascular health and overall healthy aging.

“The safety of resVida® trans-resveratrol has been proven in multiple studies. These new study results are so exciting because they are the first data that show resVida’s efficacy in humans,” said Dr. Berry. “The potential cardiovascular health benefits of resVida® shown by these data are among the first to exhibit health benefits in humans by any trans-resveratrol dietary ingredient.”

These study results were presented at the 4th International Conference on Polyphenols and Health (ICPH) in Yorkshire, England while Rachel Wong’s work was presented at the joint annual scientific meeting of the Nutrition Society of Australia (NSA) and the Nutrition Society of New Zealand (NSNZ) in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

The study analyses came from a double-blind randomized cross over intervention involving 19 overweight or obese untreated hypertensive men and post-menopausal women. Some of the participants received a placebo; others were given single doses of 30, 90, or 270 mg of resVida® at weekly intervals. One hour after consumption of resveratrol, plasma levels and flow mediated dilation (FMD) were measured.

Both analyses found that supplementation with resveratrol had a significant effect on FMD with higher amounts of resveratrol yielding better results (increasing from 3.9 +/- 0.8% after placebo to 7.6 +/- 1.6% at 270 mg).

ResVida® is now available in a gourmet bar, aptly-called The Resveratrol WineTime™ Bar, developed by ResVez, Inc. of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. The bar, a rich dark chocolate flavor harmonized with dates and almonds, also contains seven extra “super fruits.”

“We elected to incorporate resVida® as a primary source of resveratrol because it has the most extensive scientific and safety substantiation in the marketplace,” said Malcolm Nicholl, president and CEO of ResVez. “In addition we have included resveratrol from French red grapes so that we have the synergistic benefit of other polyphenols. This is a powerful combination—the best of all worlds.”

The WineTime Bar is high in fiber and low in calories, says Nicholl. “It is a true healthy indulgence. If you like chocolate and you like wine, you’ll love the WineTime Bar. It’s a gourmet treat.”

Reto Rieder, Sr. Marketing Manager at DSM Nutritional Products, the international company that developed resVida®, commented, “There is a lot of confusion right now among the public about the different types of trans-resveratrol dietary ingredients on the market. resVida® stands out because of its quality, reliability, traceability and safety. To better understand the healthy aging and health benefits of resVida® in humans, DSM has committed to a comprehensive research program with top-tier institutions.”
