The list, researched and developed by Groh & Associates, Inc., also gives insight into how HR professionals are using the internet and social media in benefits communication.

What's hot in benefits communication for 2010? According to benefits communication specialists at Groh & Associates, Inc., the top benefits communication challenges involve engaging employees and spouses in better use of health benefits and wellness programs. "Employers who want a healthier workforce so they can lower health plan costs need to create effective education programs," said Ken Groh, spokesperson for Groh & Associates, Inc. "But, it's not just the education, it's how it's delivered that needs to change if you want to succeed with these initiatives," he added.



The benefits communication specialists at Groh & Associates have compiled the top 10 benefits communication challenges for 2010. The 10 challenges are based on a research project sponsored by Groh & Associates, Inc. to learn what leading Human Resources professionals are doing to update and upgrade their benefits communication.



1. Wellness. A healthier workforce means employees and spouses regularly check their health status and follow guidelines for healthy living. HR professionals have found better success with a more customized education strategy that integrates their health plans and resources rather than relying on one carrier's standard materials or separate communications from several plan administrators.

2. Benefits consumerism. Some HR professionals have introduced consumer-driven health plans that encourage employees to use their health benefits wisely and access the health plan's resources regularly. These plans give employees more responsibility for health and benefits management, so education on how the plan works is a key to success. HR professionals with the highest participation in these plans when they are offered as a choice use an integrated communication strategy to accelerate learning and create positive experiences.

3. Engaging spouses. With today's health plans requiring more education, spouses are often left out of the communication process, or included only in mailings. However, leading HR professionals are using extranets to reach spouses through home computers. They post video podcasts, narrated presentations and webcasts to include the spouse in the education process. Extranets are outside the company firewall, which means no security issues; and they can be quickly set up by outside web designers if waiting for internal IT is an issue. Social media can be used to pull employees and spouses to the site.

4. Compensation. 2009 wasn't a good year for merit increases and bonuses for most employees. Leading HR professionals found that they can keep top performers from looking at greener pastures by communicating how merit increases and incentives are tied to business performance and by helping employees understand how to maximize rewards in support of 2010 financial goals.

5. New hires. Orientation is the employer's handshake for new employees and, if effective, support a positive first-day experience. The best orientation programs are strong, friendly and enthusiastic with sharp and concise benefits education materials. HR professionals are using online tools to give new hires a better understanding of what to expect even before their first day.

6. Benefits compliance communication. New laws impact plan administration and need to be communicated to HR staff. Also, summary plan descriptions and other documents need to be updated.

7. Benefits branding. A brand is a theme and design used to promote a product or program. What works in product marketing also works in benefits education. Most leading HR professionals are branding their benefits and compensation communications.

8. Production costs. Cost reduction continues into 2010. Some HR professionals are saving money by replacing print and mailings with electronic communications. They are working with communication specialists to create and maintain benefits extranets to provide information on an ongoing basis. Podcasts, narrated presentations, just-in-time learning and personalized information are replacing print.

9. Annual enrollment. Nothing symbolizes the old style of benefits communication than the big white envelope mailed to employees during annual enrollment. It simply has too much stuff, no focus and no consistency in messaging. Leading HR professionals are replacing it with website communications and shorter messages, such as postcards. It's more effective and cheaper.

10. Health care reform. Since the public and HR media will endlessly speculate on the impact of health care reform on health plans, HR staff and employees may be confused and looking for direction. Some HR professionals say they will distribute occasional updates to reinforce the company's commitment to quality health care for employees and families.

Today, many people are looking to Eastern traditions for instruction on meditation and contemplation to promote relaxation, spirituality, and physical health. In November 2005, the Mind & Life Institute held a three-day conference on "The Science and Clinical Applications of Meditation", in which researchers presented their findings about the positive effects of meditation on brain structures and circuitry. Daily meditation ameliorates the body's response to stress, boosts immunity, modifies negative emotions like anger, helps pull people out of the self-centered ruminations of depression, and transforms an individual's relationship to chronic pain.

Synopsis



Concord City government is ready to slash social service spending according to the Budget Message released by Ed James, City Manager. (See Attachment #3, Item #2) The City Manager indicates that because of high labor costs, including wages, healthcare and retirement benefits, the City must trim the General Fund by $2.5 million dollars per year through FY 2007-2008 to avoid layoffs or service reductions.



The Budget Task Force recommendations include reserving all of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) capital funds exclusively for City-sponsored projects instead of being directed to non-profit or other agency use. For example, current FY 04/05 CDBG capital funds total $604,540. $360,000 has been allocated to City-sponsored programs (curb cuts, etc.) while $244,500 was directed to non-city, social service agencies. In the future, all of the money will be used to staff City departments instead of a portion being directed to competent social service agencies that deliver much needed services to Concord's poor and underserved.



As the city plans to take all of the CDBG capital funds typically directed to non-profit agencies, it also has indicated it will reduce the amount of City General Fund monies it traditionally contributes to social service agencies by $100,000 in FY 2005/2006.



Here is the writing on the wall. Once the City can establish without challenge that its stated values of no cuts and full employment without addressing skyrocketing labor costs is more important than investing in a diverse array of community-based agencies delivering a variety of services, then it will be an easy matter for it to justify appropriating every dollar it can get. In this very likely scenario, the entire FY 2005-2006 CDBG funding for social service programs and the balance of General Fund monies totaling $358,800 could instead be used to fund City department budgets and programs instead of being allocated among our community-based organizations.

According to Rev. Punnett, "Because of the way we are raised up, even the most faithful find it difficult to pray truthfully during times of anger, frustration and stress. Angry prayers may seem ugly and foreign, perhaps even blasphemous. In truth, I believe, there is nothing so blasphemous as trying to fool God by just paying lip service in prayer." In fact, the angry prayer is a little recognized biblical tradition.



The Angry Prayer Project and its creator aim to encourage people of faith to pray truthfully even if they are mad at God, to raise awareness of the healing potential of angry prayers in the Bible, and to encourage people to write their own prayers and share them with others as a way of transitioning through anger toward peace.



Rev. Ian Punnett is the weekend host of the nationally syndicated Coast to Coast AM with Ian Punnett and the daily co-host of the popular Twin Cities drive-time program A Balanced Breakfast with Ian and Margery, (5 a. m.-9 a. m.) in Minneapolis-St. Paul on WFMP/FM 107. The Marine Mammal Center Comes to the Aid of an Abandoned Neonate Hawaiian Monk Seal



A young Hawaiian monk seal was found abandoned on the island of Kauai. Rehabilitation efforts are underway to care for this animal which belongs to a species of pinniped near the brink of extinction.

The Marine Mammal Center is working in collaboration with NOAA Fisheries and the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center to help rehabilitate an abandoned neonate, Hawaiian monk seal that was found on May 2, 2008 on the island of Kauai. A rescue team attempted to reintroduce the one to two days old pup to its mother but she appeared to have no interest. This pup's mother abandoned another pup last year and it died a week later. Rescuers determined that the neonate would die if left alone, so with the help of the U. S. Coast Guard, the young seal was transported to Oahu for rehabilitation.



Two trained personnel from The Marine Mammal Center were dispatched to the island to help care for the pup which weighed 32.5 lbs. They are currently feeding him a diluted milk formula and hope to graduate him to solid fish in the coming weeks.



"The population of Hawaiian monk seals has dwindled to 1,100 and continues to decline at around 4% each year," said Dr. Frances Gulland, Director of Veterinary Science at The Marine Mammal Center. "Every effort we can put forth in helping this young pup and others like him to survive can make a difference in helping the entire species continue to thrive in the wild."



Hawaiian monk seals are nearly at the brink of extinction. Conservation efforts to help this animal are crucial to the long-term survival of the species. The Center's 33 years of expertise in working with young harbor seals and elephant seals was a key component in the recent success of a captive care project - an effort to provide nutritional supplementation to juvenile female Hawaiian monk seals in hopes of improving their chances of surviving in the wild in order to reproduce. Six seals in the project were rehabilitated and released including twin female monk seals, the fourth known occurrence of twins in this species ever documented. The Center, along with NOAA Fisheries, hopes to repeat those successes with this young pup as well as other Hawaiian monk seals in the future. In the November issue of the highly-ranked journal BioEssays Brian Morris, a Professor in the School of Medical Sciences and Bosch Institute at The University of Sydney, Australia presents a powerful position statement with ramifications for all in society.



He claims that circumcision of males represents a surgical "vaccine" against a wide variety of infections, adverse medical conditions and potentially fatal diseases over the lifetime of males, and also protects their sexual partners. He makes clear that in experienced hands, this common, inexpensive procedure is very safe, can be pain-free and can be performed at any age.



The benefits vastly outweigh risks. The enormous public health benefits include protection from urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted HIV, HPV, syphilis and chancroid, penile and prostate cancer, phimosis, thrush, and inflammatory dermatoses. His calculations reveal that 1 in 3 uncircumcised males will, as a result of not being circumcised, suffer a medical condition over their lifetime that will require medical attention, and many will die from some of these.



Since most complications during circumcision are on average seen in only 1 in 500, and these are easily and immediately treated, the benefits outweigh the risks by over 100 to 1. In women circumcision of the male partner provides substantial (over 5-fold) protection from cervical cancer and chlamydia. The latter can result in pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility and ectopic pregnancy, Circumcision has socio-sexual benefits and reduces sexual problems with age. It has no adverse effect on penile sensitivity, function, or sensation during sexual arousal.



He describes the evidence that reveals why most women prefer the circumcised penis for appearance, hygiene and sex. Given the convincing epidemiological evidence and biological support, he advocates routine circumcision and says that it should be highly recommended by all health professionals.

Georgia voters in the black community have registered in larger numbers, during September and October, for the hotly contested 2004 Presidential election. In two metro Atlanta counties overall voter registration has increased significantly since the 2000 Presidential election. The Georgia Secretary of State figures show that over 27,000 new black voters registered in DeKalb County and in Fulton County during September and October.



In Dekalb County, the number of all 2004 active voters increased 10% to 345,423 active voters, according to Mary Frances Weeks, secretary to Linda Lattimore of the DeKalb County elections office. Over 120,000 DeKalb county voters have turned out during the first 4 days of the Early Voting period. Election workers and volunteers are excited about the large voter turnout, “We’re glad. We want everyone to get out and vote,” said Mary Weeks.



With the larger turnout, Jo Ann McClinton, president of the Black WomenÂ’s Coalition of Atlanta is hoping that the five commercials will help motivate AtlantaÂ’s black voters to do their part. The spots will run from 4pm to 10pm starting Thursday October 28 through the Monday before Election day.

How would you move a 12,000-pound oncology machine? Believe it or not, Siemens of Northern California used brute manpower - that is until ASE Systems developed a cost-efficient air caster system that allowed Siemens to move the system with just one man.

Developing technology for cancer treatments requires sensitive, specialized, and very expensive equipment. Periodically, the Siemens facilities in Northern California - technology experts in the healthcare and energy industries - are required to move their life-saving oncology equipment between testing areas. The 12,000-pound machines were hard to maneuver, especially through tight hallways and around sharp corners.



At first, Siemens dismissed conventional methods for moving their heavy equipment as too expensive, time consuming, or unsafe. Instead, the workers at Siemens continued to push and pull and lug the oncology equipment through the building. That is, until Al Spencer, Senior Sales Consultant at ASE Systems, stepped in with a practical solution to their problem.



After evaluating several possible alternatives, Spencer prescribed a treatment to meet Siemans needs: an air plank system consisting of two aluminum planks with an air caster element at each end. An air caster is a pneumatic lifting device used to float heavy loads - think "hovercraft." In addition, Spencer incorporated automatic flow control valves, a guide wheel, and a power drive.



"As with any job, picking the right tool is paramount to successfully accomplishing the task. Air caster systems can have hundreds of configurations, but we devised a custom system for Siemens to deal with their specific needs." says Spencer.



Why were Siemens' needs so unique? First, Siemens needed a solution that could handle unbalanced loads, as oncology machines are unevenly weighted. Second, the system needed to be able to service multiple versions of the machines. Third, Siemens wanted the oncology instruments to be movable by one man (or woman). Lastly, the load had to be precisely moved throughout facility corridors - en environment often crammed with staff and delicate instruments.



In order to overcome each of these challenges, Spencer used the divide and conquer method - he took each element of the problem, solved it, and combined the solutions to create the optimum air caster system for Siemens.



First, Spencer chose an air plank system that utilizes built-in automatic flow control valves. These valves automatically distribute the compressed air to the air caster elements and make operating the air planks simple - even with unbalanced loads.



Second, Spencer suggested that Siemens use a custom metal pallet to create the ideal interface between the machine and the air plank system; this allowed the air planks to easily service multiple machines.



Third and fourth, Spencer installed a guide wheel and power drive. The guide wheel functioned much like the casters on a shopping cart, lending stability to the system and keeping the load from sliding down slight slopes. The power drive provided complete control of the load being moved; capabilities included steering and a failsafe feature that brings the load to a halt within a few short inches should the operator loose his grip.
