Chicago, IL (PRWEB) March 11, 2006

Rising costs, inadequate funding, and varying financial priorities have led to a crisis in the nonprofit sector, in which agencies in the health and human services fields cannot afford enough trained professionals to fulfill their mission in their communities. Particularly in the wake of severe funding cuts at the state level, agencies are being forced to cut staff, limit raises and benefits, and hire staff who are untrained to work directly with a population that is in need or in severe emotional distress. Many agencies have no trained staff working directly with their service population, only volunteers. This leads to a situation in which agencies and workers with even the best of intentions are struggling to work with populations that are ill, traumatized, stressed, or otherwise in need of counseling or other interventions.

Aimee N. Daramus, M. A., L. P.C., is a Chicago-based therapist and speech communication consultant who has developed a program to address this program in a cost-effective manner. This program is designed to teach basic counseling skills to volunteers and workers with little or no formal training in counseling or social work. The one-day seminar focuses on building rapport, assessing the client’s mental and emotional functioning, identifying key issues, and keeping track of the client’s progress in addressing those issues. While this program will not replace a full education in counseling or social work, it is intended to give workers who don’t have an advanced degree a clear idea of where to begin and how to monitor progress with clients.

This seminar will be of enormous help not only to agencies providing extensive counseling services, but any agency that works with clients in some sort of mental or emotional distress, such as victims or survivors of serious illness, trauma victims, or families of divorce.
