On Thursday evening, October 21, First Candle/SIDS Alliance will host the 2004 Windflower Ball – Helping Babies Survive and Thrive. The gala evening will take place in the Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center in New York City and will raise money to support the programs and services of First Candle, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to infant health and survival.

Honorary Co-Chairs for the event are Beau and Jeff Bridges, sons of Dorothy and Lloyd Bridges who lost a child to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Meredith Vieira of ABCÂ’s The View will act as Co-Chair of the event along with Esmeralda Williamson-Noble of Considering Alexander SIDS Foundation, founder of the Windflower Ball. Honorees for the evening include The Gerber Products Company for their years of dedication to infant health and well being and Dr. Rachel Moon, a researcher and pediatrician at the ChildrenÂ’s National Medical Center in Washington, D. C.

An impressive array of Silent and Live Auction items have been donated for the event, including a New York Mets package, a 4-night stay at the Canyon Ranch Spa and an “Antinques Roadshow” package donated by Master of Ceremonies Nicholas M. Dawes (of Antiques Roadshow.) Gotham will be providing the musical entertainment for the evening. . Proceeds will be donated through the Alexander Williamson-Noble Memorial Fund at First Candle.

First Candle (formerly the SIDS Alliance) has been a key partner in the national Back To Sleep campaign, credited with reducing SIDS rates nationwide by nearly 60% - the equivalent of sparing 3,500 precious lives each year. In 2001 the Board of Directors voted to expand the mission of the organization to include all sudden infant deaths during the prenatal period through age 2 – including stillbirth and miscarriage. According to Dr. Marian Sokol, President of First Candle, “There are more than 26,000 stillbirth deaths in the United States each year, and very little is being done to understand why. It is our goal to take the knowledge and experience we have gained in fighting SIDS to save even more precious lives.”
